Interpretation - It's my life

One of the most well known Bon Jovi songs and fan favorite. 'It's my life' was released in 2000 as the lead single from the album 'Crush'. This album can be seen as the second comeback for the band (first one is 'Keep the faith') which helped them to become interesting to a new generation of fans. The fanbase always consisted of the long time fans who have grown up with the band from the 80s. Now it got even bigger when they gained a lot of new fans who were teenagers in 2000 and discovered the band at the time of 'Crush'.

'It's my life' mirrors the typical Bon Jovi values like strengh, optimism and beliving in oneself. First Jon thought that the song is too personal and that people wouldn't like it. The he fortunately put it on the album and recognized that the people adapted his story to their own lives and became 'Tommy and Gina'. Fans just can easily relate to the lyrics because it tells the story of a working class couple already known from 'Livin' on a prayer'. They tell themselves to hold on and to be strong even if it's hard 'This is for the ones who stood their ground, for Tommy and Gina who never backed down'.

The narrator explains that '[He] ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd' and that 'It's [his] life, it's now or never' which helpes the listener to recognize that it's always the best way to be oneslef, to beliefe in oneself and to never listen to what others think about you. You only have one life and it's the only chance to be who you want to be and to love your life.

In general, 'It's my life' is a mainstream rock song which can be heard in the sing-along-chorus, the mainstream topic and the easy-to-understand lyrics.

Moreover, the video is a very modern one and obviously targets a young fan base. It is said that the video is inspired by the movie 'Lola runs'.

Fun Fact: The song contains the line: 'Like Frankie said 'I did it my way'' in the chorus. Some would say that it is obvious, but for those who don't: 'Franky' is Frank Sinatra who was also born in New Jersey and who is a role modle of Jon.
