The really interesting thing in this song is that the lyrics are written in form of a direct speech to God. The narrator first describes his living situation and his problems and then asks for
example: 'Hey God, tell me what the hell is going on?' or 'I know how busy you must be, but hey God, do you ever think about me?'.
Besides, he presents his feelings and point of view: 'Seems like all the good shit's gone, it keeps on getting harder hangin' on, hey God, there's night's you know I want to scream, these days
you're even harder to believe'.
The listener can see the more serious and realistic point of view of the writer immediately, maybe even the loss of optimism which is extremly unusual for Bon Jovi. We can say that they have
grown up now and that they also concentrate on social content in their lyrics. This may be one of the reasons why 'These days' (released in 1995) is considered the darkest Bon Jovi album so far.
This is no lack of quality because we all would agree that this 'darker' music simply fits to the lyrical content.
Fun Fact: 'These days' kicked Michael Jacksons 'HIStory' from the number one spot in the album charts in 1995. :)
